Do you know what Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Oxford University, Cambridge University, Saint Andrews, (Scotland’s oldest university) and the University of Edinburgh all have in common? Each of these schools were Bible-proclaiming schools originally. Don’t believe me? Just read about their founders.
Harvard was named after a Christian minister. Princeton’s crest still says, “Dei sub numine viget,” which is Latin for “Under God she flourishes.” Cambridge University was established by Christian leaders. Saint Andrews was founded principally for the teaching and study of theology. The University of Edinburgh had a thoroughly evangelical beginning, being founded under Presbyterian auspices.
These well-known schools once held Christian beliefs and were deeply committed to teaching the Word of God. So, what happened? How did they drift from the teaching of the Holy Scriptures only to pick up the lies of our culture and embrace false doctrine? Well, wonder no longer, because the Bible tells us how it happened then, and how it continues to happen today!
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.2 Timothy 4:3-4
There is a 4-step process going from teaching the truth to believing a lie.
Step # 1 = “men will not put up with sound doctrine”
Doctrine is replaced with new and better programs, or passions.
Step # 2 = “they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear”
People become more preoccupied with teaching that pleases them, instead of “Thus says the Lord.”
Step # 3 = “They will turn their ears away from the truth”
They consciously replace truth with something else.
Step # 4 = “turn aside to myths”
The final step is that a decision is made to replace the authority of God’s truth in our schools, churches and homes with Satan’s myths. (i.e. there is more than one way to God, easy-believism, God loves us too much to ever send anyone to hell, it’s more important to feel good instead of being made good by work of the cross.)
So how do we keep this 4-step process from coming into our churches, Christian schools, and homes? Paul doesn’t leave us wondering! He tells us what to do in verse 2… Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage–with great patience and careful instruction. (2 Timothy 4:2)
Preach the Word! Preach the Word! Preach the Word! And when you have nothing else to say, Preach the Word!!
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
Jesus said… Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. (John 17:17)
“Preach the Word” might not be popular. Some might call it old-fashioned. It might seem uncomfortable. But no matter what, preach it! Religious myths are abounding… emotions can deceive many into believing a lie. Self-deception is subtle! But the truth, The Word of God, will literally save your life.
When you commit to becoming a Berean, those you spiritually influence will forever be grateful… Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. (Acts 17:11)
I want to let you know that I will be taking a break from writing my blogs. Thank you for the many that have encouraged me over the years with your kind remarks. Thank you for sharing my posts and allowing God to use them in ways far beyond I could have ever imagined before I began.
May this song encourage you as it shares the truth that sets us free!!
