Our God is a God of promises. And He’s the only one.
Submitted for your consideration: Isaiah 65.
Israel had messed up bad. They had not loved the Lord God with all their hearts and souls and minds or their neighbors as themselves in spite of swearing they would.
They turned away from the God of Abraham who called them and created them as a nation and worshiped other gods. And as a result He turned away from them.
He allowed Assyria to annihilate Israel (the Northern Kingdom) in Isaiah’s time. Then he allowed Babylon to conquer Judah and Jerusalem in Jeremiah’s time.
Through their sins they brought destruction on themselves. But although they deserved annihilation, God was merciful.
Here he is, talking through Isaiah: “For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind.” That is a wonderful promise.
And what about us? Are own sins overwhelming us? Are we experiencing destruction in our lives that, if we’re honest about it, we’ve brought upon ourselves?
If so, then it’s important to understand that WE are now God’s chosen people too. “All who believe in Him are called according to His purposes.” So this wonderful promise is for us too.
“Behold I am making all things new.” Our wonderful Savior, the Lion of Judah, has conquered sin and the Evil One. Those who put their faith in Him are being made new, just as God promised long ago.
Not through themselves. Not because of how good or holy they are. Not through human effort. But because they are “washed in the blood of the lamb.”
Though their sins were like scarlet, they have become whiter than snow. Their past may be as squirrely as ancient Israel’s. But God has recreated them through the faithful obedience of His Son.
Jesus did not consider equality with God as something to be grasped but humbled Himself even to the cross. He allowed Himself to be sacrificed for our sake. And as a result, we are made new.
“For I am about to create a new heavens and a new earth.” God the Father accomplished this through His Son. Through Jesus all things were created, and through Jesus all things have been recreated.
We are a new creation. Can we feel it? Can we feel ourselves dying in Him only to be reborn in Him? Can we accept such amazing grace and bend our knees in adoration and love? Because our God is a God of promises. And He’s the only one.
