“First of all, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity.” – 1 Timothy 2:1-2

So let’s chat for a moment about prayer.

The first thing we can say is it puts us in direct relationship with God. We talk to Him; he answers according to his will.

Do you want such a relationship? Are you weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Fold your hands and close your eyes and talk to God about what’s troubling you. Is it money? Is it work? Is it something with the kids? Is it the sister who’s driving you crazy?

If we try to bottle this stuff up, it will burst and fill us with poison. But burdening ourselves with worry and bitterness is not necessary. Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Prayer starts with faith. If you believe in Him, you can talk to Him. It’s that simple.

Prayer is supplication and submission. If we submit to God when we pray, then we have a literal lifeline to God. If not, then all we have is an echo chamber.

Paul says pray for everyone, and for kings (presidents) and all people in high places. Are we doing this? Are we bathing our mixed-up world in prayer?

If so, then we are promised something wonderful: a quiet and peaceful life led in godliness and dignity.

Now stop for a moment and think about this. Is there anything better than a quiet life and dignity? Is there anything the human spirit longs for more?

Paul encourages us to pray continually. “Don’t be anxious about anything, but by prayer and supplication make your requests known unto God; and the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds in Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Phil. 4:6-7)

Do you want peace? There’s an answer. Take it to the Lord in prayer.

I’m so easily distracted that it’s easy for me not to pray. But one thing I’ve noticed. My day always goes much better and my mood is always brighter when I start the day with prayer.

So fold your hands and close your eyes and pray. Do it every morning when you rise. God is good. “He opens up His hands and satisfies the desire of every living thing.” (Ps. 145:16)
